2nd International Conference – ICAIIS 2019 Report

Executive Summary:

The 2^nd International Conference on ‘Innovations in Computing, Automation and Intelligent Information Systems’ (ICAIIS-2019) was held at MVJ College of Engineering, Bengaluru. The Conference was organized by the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering and Information Science & Engineering, MVJCE, on 29^th and 30^th May, 2019.

ICAIIS-2019 was organized to provide an excellent platform for academicians, researchers and students to share their knowledge, expertise and research findings in Intelligent Computing, encompassing many areas like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Internet of Things, Big Data, Image Processing and Automation. The Keynote Address was delivered by the Guest of Honour, Dr Lipo Wang (Associate Professor, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) and the Chief Guests Dr. T Senthil Kumar (Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore) and Dr. Anand Kumar M (Assistant Professor, Department of Information Technology, NIT-K Surathkal, Karnataka).

The Keynote Speakers provided great insight into their area of research in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing. There were presentations of research papers by participants, on various topics supported by recent innovative trends in intelligent computing. The conference was highly appreciated by all attendees. The Question and Answer sessions during the course of the sessions were very useful, as they gave an opportunity to the participants, to discuss and share innovative ideas and implementable solutions.

DAY 1 – 29/05/2019: Morning Session –10 am to 12.40 pm

The Inaugural session of ICAIIS-2019 was held in Smt. Rajalakshmi Jayaraman Seminar Hall, MVJCE, on 29^th May, 2019. There were around 300 attendees, which included academicians, students and researchers. The International Conference was presided over by the Guest of Honour, Dr. Lipo Wang (Associate Professor, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) and the Chief Guests Dr. T Senthil Kumar (Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore) and Dr. Anand Kumar M (Assistant Professor, Department of Information Technology, NIT-K Surathkal, Karnataka).

The Inauguration commenced at 10 am on an auspicious note with an invocation song, followed by lighting of lamp by the dignitaries. Then, our Principal Dr Nagaraj Sitaram, gave the Welcome Speech. Dr. R Prabhu, Dean – MVJCE, addressed the gathering with his valuable inputs about knowledge sharing in various research areas and the importance of digital revolution in today’s world. Prof. Sanchari Saha, HOD – Dept. of ISE, MVJCE, introduced our Guest of Honour, Dr. Lipo Wang. Prof. I Manimozhi, HOD – Dept. of CSE, MVJCE, introduced our Chief Guest Dr. T Senthil Kumar. Prof. K. Sindhuja, Dept. of CSE, introduced our Chief Guest Dr. M Anand Kumar.

The Conference proceedings was released by all the dignitaries on the dais.

Dr. Lipo Wang delivered his Keynote Address on ‘Knowledge Sharing in Machine Learning, for Data Classification, Forecasting and Image Retrieval’. He enlightened the audience about Machine Learning, and threw light on his research work on various applications such as Bioinformatics, Image Analysis, Stock Trading and Time Series Prediction. He elaborated on how machine learning is used in Micro array gene selection and diagnostics, SNP selection and population classification and EEG recognition for emotion and stress. He also described his work on image analysis, which was deployed in Glaucoma diagnosis, Brain trauma diagnosis, face recognition and content-based image retrieval. He further spoke on Feature selection, RBF Neural Networks, Defect Detection in Electronic chips, Deep Learning for Action recognition and Stock trading and time series prediction.

Dr Anand Kumar delivered his Keynote Address on ‘Research Directions in Natural Language Processing, and Social Media Text Analytics using Deep Learning”. He spoke about the upcoming research in various applications of Natural Language processing such as Sentiment Analysis, Text classification and clustering (Document classification, Topic identification and modeling, Spam detection, Journal identification, Authorship identification, Age/Gender identification), Deep Learning based NLP systems for Indian Languages etc.

Dr. T Senthil Kumar delivered his Keynote Address on ‘Statistics and Machine Learning for Real Time applications – a User Perspective’. He elaborated on statistical methods in machine learning, such as Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machines and K-means algorithm and its deployment in various applications like Feature classification of facial expression, Data analytics, Malpractice detection etc.

The inaugural session concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Shyam P Joy, Associate Professor, Dept. of CSE, MVJCE. The Guest of Honour, Dr. Lipo Wang and the Chief Guests Dr. Anand Kumar and Dr. Senthil Kumar were felicitated with mementos, as a token of appreciation.

DAY1 – 29/05/2019: Afternoon Session –  1.30 pm – 5.30 pm

Paper Presentation – Track 1: Session 1, was held from 01.30 pm to 3.30 pm, in Seminar Hall 4, MVJCE. It was chaired by Dr. Lipo Wang, Dr. T Senthil Kumar and Dr. Anand Kumar M.

Paper Presentation – Track 2: Session 1, was held from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm in Seminar Hall 6, MVJCE, and was chaired by Dr. T Senthil Kumar, Dr. Arvind (Associate Professor – Department of CSE, MVJCE) and Dr. V Vinothkumar (Associate Professor – Department of CSE, MVJCE). There was tea break from 3.30 pm to 3.45 pm.

After the tea break, Paper Presentation – Track 1:  Session 2, was held from 3.45 pm to 5.30 pm, in Seminar Hall 4, MVJCE, and was chaired by Dr. Lipo Wang, Dr. Anand Kumar and Dr. Shyam P Joy.

Paper Presentation – Track 2: Session2, was held from 3.45 pm to 5.30 pm, in Seminar Hall 6, MVJCE, and was chaired by Dr. T Senthil Kumar, Dr. Muzammil Hussain (Associate Professor – Department of ISE, MVJCE) and Dr. S K Manju Bargavi (Associate Professor – Department of CSE, MVJCE). 20 minutes was allotted to each participant, for his/her presentation; this was followed by Q&A session, for 10 minutes.

DAY 2 – 30/05/2019: Morning Session – 9.00 am to 1.00 pm

After this session, there was a tea break from 11.00 am to 11.30 am.

DAY 2 – 30/05/2019: Afternoon Session – 1.50 pm to 3.45 pm – Valedictory Function

The Valedictory function was held at Smt. Rajalakshmi Jayaraman Seminar Hall, on 30^th May 2019, at 1.50 pm. The function commenced with introduction of the Chief Guest Dr. T Senthil Kumar (Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore) by Dr. Arvind (Associate Professor – CSE, MVJCE). Dr T Senthil Kumar delivered the Valedictory Key Note Address and appreciated the efforts of the Department in organizing the Conference.

Finally, certificates were issued by the Speakers, and feedback was collected from faculty participants from all departments. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Mrs. Sanchari Saha, Convener, ICAIIS-2019 (HOD – Department of ISE, MVJCE).
