Guest Lecture – Software Test Automation

The Department of Computer Science Engineering (CSE), MVJ College of Engineering, organized a guest lecture on ‘Software Test Automation’, on 13th October 2018, in Room No. 251, Department of CSE. The purpose of this Guest Lecture was to expose the students to Software Test Automation, and familiarize them with tools such as Selenium IDE, JDK and scripting languages.

The Guest Speaker was Mr. S Senthilmurugan (Software Technical Architect Specialist, TATA ELXSI Pvt. Ltd.). He has more than 18 years of experience in the field of software testing and automation.

Around 50 students (5th and 7th semester – CSE) and faculty members arrived by 8:30 AM, to listen to the lecture. Mr. S Senthilmurugan and Prof. G. Sivagamasundari (ASP / CSE) graced the dais with their presence. The event started at 8.30 AM, with a welcome speech by Prof. Antra Mahadkar (AP / CSE). A brief introduction about the Guest Speaker was given, after which Mr. S Senthilmurugan began his lecture.

Mr. S Senthilmurugan started his lecture by giving an introduction to Software Testing and its basic concepts. He then spoke about the importance of software automation testing in the IT field. He gave a comparison between manual and automation testing, and the advantages and challenges in software test automation. He described in detail the Test Automation framework and Selenium IDE, for working on the scripting. He gave a demo to the students about how selenium should be used for automation. The students benefitted from a hands-on session in the Selenium scripting tool, and they learnt about Record and Playback actions in Selenium.


Outcome of the Event:

The participants understood the concepts in software test automation, its advantages, applications and challenges. They also learnt to use Selenium IDE for implementing test automation. The guest lecture was conducted to bridge the gap between subject knowledge and its practical applications. Thereby, the students attained the POs Engineering Knowledge, Problem Analysis, Design/Development of solutions, Modern Tool Usage, Life Long Learning.
