Report on Faculty Development Programme on Effective Online Teaching

Faculty Development Programme on Effective Online Teaching was organized by the National Institute of Technical Training And Research, Chennai, on 17.08.2020, 19.08.2020, 20.08.2020, 21.08.2020 and 29.08.2020. Nearly 40 faculty members from MVJ College of Engineering, Bangalore, participated enthusiastically, through the online platform Microsoft teams.

On 17.08.2020, at 9.30 am the programme was inaugurated by Director, NITTTR and Principal MVJCE. On all the five days, the morning session (09:30-12:45) and the afternoon session (1.45-05.00) were devoted for Online presentation and Offline activity.

Day 1 (17.08.2020, 10.00 AM -12.45 PM)

Title: Registration and Course Outline

Resource person: Er. V. Siva Kumar, NITTTR Extension Centre, Bangalore.

As per the schedule, the programme started at 10.00 am after the inauguration. Er. Siva Kumar introduced himself and interacted with all the participants individually, getting their feedback of their experiences gained in online teaching. He summarized the views and expectations of participants from this Faculty Development Program. He shared the google classroom link and asked the participants to join. In the google classroom he shared the tentative schedule of the program.

Day 1 (17.08.2020, 1.45 PM – 5.00 PM )

Title:Video based lesson using stream

Resource person: Dr. G. Janardhanan, NITTTR, Chennai

Dr. G. Janardhanan, NITTTR, Chennai, gave hands on training on the MS Streams, Uploading the video in streams with captions and subtitles. He explained about the Insights and its benefit in Teams.

He gathered the opinions of the participants on online teaching, using the tool ‘Mentimeter’.

Er. V. Siva Kumar, NITTTR Extension Centre Bangalore, explained about open ended experiments in detail and clarified the participants’ queries. He gave an assignment on it.

Day 2 (19.08.2020, 10.00 AM -12.45 PM)

Title: Learning Management System for OBE Process

Resource Person: Dr. Umashanker Sahu, NITTTR Extension Centre, Hyderabad

Dr. Umashanker Sahu explained the Learning Management System with a presentation, and gave hands on training for creating MOODLE Account. He presented Game based teaching to enhance the students’ participation in class.

Day 2 (19.08.2020, 1.45 PM – 5.00  PM)

Title: Connecting through Concept Map in Teams

Resource Person: Dr. G. Janardhanan, NITTTR, Chennai

Dr. G. Janardhanan, NITTTR, Chennai, explained about the Mindmeister and gave hands on training on this. He gave an assignment and participants were instructed to post the completed assignment in google classroom. He introduced free mind for the map.

Day 3 (20.08.2020, 10.00 AM -12.45 PM)

Title: Developing Higher Order abilities through RBT

Resource Person: Er. V. Siva Kumar, NITTTR Extension Centre, Bangalore

Er. V. Siva Kumar, elaborated on the higher order abilities through RBT. He interacted with the participants and discussed about RBT, Rubrix, and Habits of Engineer. He gathered the opinions of the participants.

Day 3 (20.08.2020, 1.45 PM – 5.00 PM)

Title: Assessment and Collaboration Tools in Teams

Resource Person: Dr. P. Malliga, NITTTR, Chennai

Dr. P. Malliga, introduced the Assessment and Collaboration Tools in online teaching. This was the most eagerly anticipated outcome of the programme. She gave hands on training for Google forms, MS forms, Mentimeter, kahoot, thinglink.

It was interesting to learn about the tools which can be used for improving the conversation with students in online teaching.

Day 4 (21.08.2020, 10.00 AM – 12.45 PM)

Title : Implementation of LMS

Resource Person: Dr. V. Shanmuganeethi, NITTTR, Chennai

Dr. V. Shanmuganeethi, gave hands on training on the moodle course, a part of Implementation of LMS. He explained and showed the features in the moodle cloud. All participants were instructed to add the course in moodle and post the link in the google classroom as an assignment work.

Day 4 (21.08.2020, 1.45 PM – 5.00 PM)

Title: Open ended Experiments and CDIO Curriculum through RBT

Resource Person: Er. V. Siva Kumar, NITTTR Extension Centre, Bangalore

Er. V. Siva Kumar explained about the CDIO Curriculum in detail with a case study. He interacted with faculty regarding teaching without a classroom. He sought their opinion on this matter.

He illustrated the advantages and challenges in CDIO Curriculum and clarified the participants’ queries.

Day 5 (29.08.2020, 10.00 AM – 12.45 PM)

Title: Developing  E-portfolio of individual student

Resource Person: Er. V. Siva Kumar, NITTTR Extension Centre, Bangalore

Er. V. Siva Kumar, NITTTR, explained about the important of E portfolio. He assigned work on the E portfolio of the students and instructed the participants to post it in google

Classroom

Day 5 (29.08.2020, 1.45 PM – 5.00 PM)

Title: Assessment of Training Programme

Resource Person: Dr. Umashanker Sahu, NITTTR Extension Centre, Hyderabad

The participants were instructed to attend the assessment through google form. The Assessment process was carried out in two parts. In the First Part, 35 questions were asked regarding teaching methodology. Dr. Umashanker Sahu discussed the answers to each question. In Part Two, 10 Questions were asked about the MVJCE Teaching Methodology (Online). Participants were also instructed to give their feedback about the training programme.

Principal, MVJCE, gave the valedictory speech, marking the successful completion of the programme, with all the planned tasks accomplished successfully.
