A team from MVJ College of Engineering participated in SMART INDIA HACKATHON 2019, Grand finale, held at NIT Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on 2nd and 3rd March 2019. The team of six, including three girls, represented the college for the first time at a national level event. The team named ‘SAGITTARIUS’ competed with IIT Roorkee and other colleges, straight for 36 hours, trying to solve the problem statement presented to them by CYIENT GIS. In this third SIH SOFTWARE EDITION, around 28 teams competed at NIT Jamshedpur, facing off with their problem statement. The team members had been selected after a month-long filtering process.
CYIENT is a service-based company, working on GIS (Geographic Information System) projects. The company presented three problem statements in SIH 2019, and ‘IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE USING LIDAR POINT CLOUD DATA’ was one of them. After a month-long preparation and hard work, the MVJCE team presented its output in front of the judges. It was a complicated project concentrating on creating immersive experience using point cloud data from LIDAR. The work of the team was highly appreciated by the Judge Mr. Chaitanya Kumar C H, who promised further support for the research and development of the project. Giving a tough competition to IIT Roorkee and Pune Institute of Computer Technology, the MVJCE team from Bangalore was applauded by esteemed dignitaries such as Prof. Arvind Choubey, Dr. Vishnu Priye, Praful Nikam , R. Subramanyam, Dr. Anil D Sahasrabudhe and Dr. Anand Deshpande.
“It was a great challenge for us, competing with colleges like IIT Roorkee, to work on a complicated problem statement with very little initial knowledge. There was great support both from our college and from our mentor Dr. Sivakannan S, without whom we would not have been able to successfully complete our project”, says team member Rohit H. The college is indeed proud of its team, for not only representing the college for the first time in a national level competition, but for also coming out in flying colours!
