An industrial visit to Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), was organized by the Industrial Visit Coordinator of the Computer Science Engineering department – Mrs. KALAIMATHI B (Assistant Professor, Dept. of CSE). On receiving the letter of invitation from Mr. SRINIVAS, Scientist – ISRO, the 4th semester students from Computer Science and Engineering enrolled into this program, and proceeded on the industrial visit to ISRO, Bangalore, on October 10, 2018. 63 students, accompanied by Mrs. ANTHRA, Assistant Professor, Dept. of CSE and Mrs. SAHANA, Assistant Professor, Dept. of CSE, assembled in the college at 12:30 pm, and left for the destination in the college bus.
They reached ISRO at 2:00 pm and were received by a staff member there, who guided them to the conference hall. Here, the students and faculty members were welcomed by Mr. SRINIVAS, Scientist, ISRO. He first briefed them on the program and the schedule for the day. Following this, the students were taken to the conference hall and a short video was played to make the students understand how the Chandraayan launch takes place. Mr. Srinivas started the session by briefing about the Chandraayan-2 launch.
Subsequently, the students were introduced to the various methods used in component testing for satellite parts. They were then taken to the Component Testing chamber, where the testing actually takes place. The Testing Lab had three different testing chambers of different sizes (1.6m, 2.4m, 4m) for testing different satellite parts.
Students were then ushered to the Rover Manufacturing Lab. They were familiarized with the different parts of rover. By seeing and studying a rover which was under manufacture, the students also got an insight into how these rovers will be landed on the Moon and capture the images, and send the images to the earth for further research.
Students were then taken to the Satellite Exhibition. Here they were shown models of all the satellites launched from India and detailed explanation was offered by the staff on these. Also, the images of different parts of the world taken from the Moon from a distance of 400 km were also shown.
The last session was the Question and Answer session. In the beginning of the session, students got detailed inputs on the various satellites launched from India, from the year 1972 till date. Mr. Srinivas also explained the entire Satellite Manufacturing Process. This was followed by a series of questions and answers. Mr. Srinivas also encouraged the students to join ISRO.
The Industrial Visit was a great learning experience. We express our thanks to the Management, Principal, Dean, Vice Principal and Head of Department for permitting and arranging the Industrial Visit, and the faculty members for accompanying the students to the venue and being supportive.
Outcome of the Event:
The students understood the concept of how the samples of information collected from various sources can be turned into real-time data and predictions. The students saw the Chandrayaan-2 used by ISRO – it includes a lunar orbiter, lander and rover, all developed by India. They gained knowledge about various new technologies and new experiments.
