MATLITE Club Activity – PI Day Celebration

The Department of Mathematics, MVJ College of Engineering,organized an event ‘Calculation using Calculator’on 13th March, 2021,to commemorate InternationalPI Day – 2021.

The event comprising two rounds (Qualifying round and Final round) started at 8.30 am, in Rajalakshmi Seminar Hall. In the qualifying round, around 100 students from different disciplines of First year Engineering participated. Out of these, 26 students were selected for the final round.

In the final round, two students who performed well within the prescribed time were selected as winners (First and Second). Our Management appreciated the winners by awarding cash prize and certificate.

The details of the winners:

First Prize          : Abhishek Sharma of 1st semester ‘I’ Section

Second Prize    : Debjit Saha of 1st semester ‘H’ Section

This event was followed by a Lecture by the Chief guest Dr. G.N. Mohapatra, Senior Scientist, CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute (CSIR-4PI), NAL Belur Campus, Bangalore. The Lecture session was held at M V Jayaraman Auditorium at 11.30 am. All the First year students and faculty members attended the lecture.

The session started with an invocation song by First year student Ishwarya, followed by the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Dr.P Mahabaleswarappa, Principal MVJCE, welcomed the audience and the Guest Speaker. He spoke about the origin and significance of PI. He explained to the students why PI Day is celebrated on 14th March.

Dr.M. Saradha, HOD, Department of Mathematics introduced the Chief Guest to the audience.

The Chief GuestDr. G N Mohapatra started his presentation with an introduction to theCSIR-4th Paradigm Institute, and its role in weather forecasting. He then went on to speak about PI and the importance of Mathematics in everyday life. He elaborated on the basics of mathematical modeling and their classification along with engineering applications. He focused on big data analysis and learning.

The presentation was followed by a Question & Answer session, where the Guest Speaker addressed the queries of the attendees.

The Guest Speaker, along with the Principal and HOD (Mathematics), honoured the winners of the event ‘Calculation using Calculator’, with cash prize and certificate. Participation certificates were given to the students who were selected for the final round.

The session concluded with vote of thanks to the Management, Principal, Vice Principal and COE of MVJCE, for providing this opportunity to celebrate PI Day.A special mention to ITHELPDESK and team for their technical support during the session.

Outcome of the Event

 The event enabled the students to understand the necessity of a scientific calculator in Engineering and to develop an interest to solve Puzzle related problems.

The session enabled the attendees to build and strengthen their knowledge in mathematical modeling and its applications, in the present scenario.

The COVID-19 SOPs were maintained throughout the event.
