Second Place in SECOND NATIONAL AEROSPACE CONCEPTUAL DESIGN COMPETITION

Oct 06, 2019

The Aeronautical Society of India – Mumbai organized the Second National Aerospace Conceptual Design Competition, on 17th August, 2019.The students of the Aeronautical Department, MVJCE, formed a team with five members for Abhimanyu 2.0, which secured the 2nd place in the competition, winning a cash prize of ₹15000.

The project was based on the conceptual design of a LIDAR-equipped Unmanned High-Altitude Platform LU-HAP, which can carry out mapping of coastal habitats, detecting shoreline changes and generating an accurate digital elevation model of coastal areas, for scientific studies.

The NACDeC 2.0 consisted of three main rounds, preceded by a zeroth review which comprised problem statement, mission requirements, major challenges to be overcome and the calculations expected from the participants.

The First round was a preliminary design round, or initial concept round, wherein a Report was to be submitted – a Report consisting of literature survey, UAV configuration/structure layout, propulsion method, mission profile and basic approach route. This Report was to be submitted on 8th January 2019. 20 teams were shortlisted, including our team Abhimanyu 2.0.

The Second round was midterm review, wherein all the calculations for propulsion based on selected mission profile to carry out the mission had to be done, and iteration for UAV platform configuration, airfoil selection was carried out. The Midterm report was submitted on 25th March 2019. After reviewing of these reports, 14 teams were selected for the next round.

The Third round included the submission of the final report, wherein the team did stability, performance calculations and analysis, and fixed the subsystems that were to be used in UAV. The top 5 finalists were shortlisted, based on this final report- Team Abhimanyu 2.0 found a place here. The Finalists were now asked to prepare a Power Pointpresentation that would expound their report.

The Top 5 teams – MVJCE Bangalore, MIT Manipal, Amity University Delhi, IIT Kanpur, KCIT Coimbatore – gave presentations. Dr. Rajkumar Pant organized the event, with AeSI (Aeronautical Society of India) Committee. Dr. TG Pai , Design team – LCA Tejas was the Chief Guest, along with Professor Bose from IIT Kanpur and other dignitaries from NAL and Siemens India.
