A Five-days’ FDP was organized by ECE and IIOT Department on Industrial Internet of Things from 6th to 10th June 2023. The FDP program received an overwhelming response, with thirty participants. This FDP included technical sessions from resource persons of reputed Industries/Academia along with demonstration and hands-on experience on topics such as Industrial automation, Thingspeak, Ubidots, Wireless communication and Web app controller.

About the FDP

The program was presided over by Dr. M Brindha, Principal, MVJ College of Engineering. The session started at 10 am with 30 participants including Faculty Members and intern students from various departments of MVJCE.

This FDP was designed with state-of-the-art concepts of Industrial IoT and its applications. The programme was a blend of sessions in forenoon and demonstration of experimental setup in afternoon. Half of the program designed for theory was handled by domain experts from IISC, ISRO, DRDO and IIIT. This FDP on Industrial IOT served as a platform to train and enhance the knowledge of research scholars, faculties, and interns on cutting edge technologies in emerging area. The FDP enhances the quality of teaching and will motivate the students to take up the challenges in this interdisciplinary field.

Day 1 (6.05.2023): Session I (Inauguration Ceremony)

The FDP on Industrial IOT commenced on 06th June 2023 with thirty participants presided by Dr. Brindha M, Principal, MVJCE. Ms. Meenal Kalpesh Deore, Assistant Professor,Department of ECE, MVJCE welcomed the gathering and briefed on the goals and importance of the FDP on Industrial IOT. Ms. Shruthi, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE, MVJCE introduced the chief guest Dr. Badrinath Ramamurthy, Professor, IIIT, Bangalore. As a token of appreciation Dr.M. Brindha, Principal, MVJCE presented Memento and bouquet to the chief guest.

Dr.S.Sajithra Varun, Assistant Professor, Department of IIOT, MVJCE explained the aim of the FDP which is to enhance the knowledge about the use of Internet of Things in Industrial sectors, its applications and Industry 4.0. and elaborated on the topics such as Smart solutions to the industries, interconnection of devices and machines, energy efficiency, advanced analytics and integration of various sensors in the field were also highlighted.

Chief guest Dr.Badrinath Ramamurthy, Professor, IIIT, Bangalore started the session with the Technological overview on Challenges and State of art technologies followed by connectivity, automation, bridging a semantic gap, the importance of the two pillars of learning, Standards,Architecture, Ontologies from Language to logic and Logic to Language were the key concepts explained. The session ended with concepts on Industry 4.0 and questions for self-evaluation on IOT-Connectivity as practice questions.

Day 1 (06.06.2023 Session II):

Experiment 1: Controlling of LED using Mobile App

Session II was handled by Dr.Sajithra Varun S,Assistant Professor ,Department of IIOT on the demonstration of Controlling the LEDs using mobile app. MIT app inventor was used to create the app and the faculties were also given practice to the real time controlling of the LED’s using moble app. MIT App Inventor is an incredible web application that helps users build interesting Android applications. It is a block-based programming tool through which users can create fully functional apps for Android devices such as smartphones, tablets e.tc.

Day 2 (7.06.2023 Session I):

The second day of the programme began with the introduction of the chief guest Dr.Shalabh Bhatnagar, Senior Professor, IISC, Department of Computer Science and Automation Bangalore by Ms. Meenal Kalpesh Deore, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE, MVJCE. Dr.I. Hameem Shanavas, HOD, Department of ECE presented a memento as a token of appreciation to the chief guest.

Dr. Shalabh Bhatnagar briefed about the topic “Introduction to Reinforcement Learning” .The session included various concepts on Stochastic approximation algorithms, Q-learning and two-timescale Q-learning, Application to intrusion detection via a sensor network, Application to vehicular traffic control, Application in Smart Grids, Reinforcement learning for off-policy control. It was very interactive session and the ongoing projects in IISC such as Global optimization techniques, Rate of convergence in stochastic approximation, Constant step-size algorithms were also discussed.

Day 2 (7.06.2023 Session II):

Experiment 2: Wireless Communication

The second session included the experiment illustration by Dr.S.Sajithra Varun, Assistant Professor, Department of IIOT, MVJCE on wireless communication using two nRF24 modules and two ESP32 modules. The circuit diagram along with its different applications were briefed with ESP32 module being replaced by Arduino Uno for wireless communication. Installation of the libraries along with the working principle were illustrated during the demonstration. The illustration of real time example for controlling the LED using switch which can be extended for home automation was explained.

Day 3 (08.06.2023 Session I):

The chief guest for the session was Mr. Bimal Raj K, Scientist F, GTRE, DRDO, Bangalore. The session began with a welcome by Ms. Farha Kowser, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE,MVJCE. Dr.Thilagaraj M, Associate Professor, Department of IIOT,MVJCE introduced the chief guest Mr. Bimal Raj K, Scientist F, GTRE, DRDO, Bangalore.

After the formal introduction, the session was taken over by the chief guest. He gave the overview of Jet Engine Control. The various aspects of automation processes in Jet Engine Control along with the current research areas in DRDO were highlighted in the session. The application of the theoretical knowledge to real time practical implementation were briefed in detail.

Day 3 (8.06.2023 Session II):

Experiment 3: Air quality Monitoring using ThingSpeak

This session included the illustration of ThingSpeak experiment which can be used for real time monitoring of Air quality, home automation and security. The input side included ESP 32 along with active low IR sensor and after sensing the data was monitored using ThingSpeak.

Day 4 (9.06.2023):

Forenoon Session of day 4 began with a welcome. Ms. Farha Kowser, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE, MVJCE welcomed the guest. Dr.Thilagaraj M, Associate Professor, Department of IIOT, MVJCE introduced the chief guest Dr. Amrita Mishra, Assistant Professor, IIIT, Bangalore. Dr. Madhusudanan N presented the memento and bouquet as a token of appreciation to the chief guest.

The session was taken over by the chief guest on IOT in 5G Wireless communication. She discussed the future of 6G and its impact on IOT and also spoke about the facilities available in IIIT, Bangalore for students and faculties.

Day 5 (10.06.2023):

Day 5 began with a welcome by Dr.Thilagaraj M, Associate Professor, Department of IIOT. The chief guest of the day was Ms. Litty Jose, Scientist F/Engineer, ISRO, Bangalore. Dr. Biswaranjan Barik, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE introduced the chief guest Ms.Litty Jose. As a token of appreciation, memento and bouquet was presented to the chief guest by Dr.Madusudanan N, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE, MVJCE.

The session was taken over by Ms.Litty Jose, Scientist F/Engineer, ISRO, Bangalore on the topic “Automation in Spacecraft operations and Future trends” . A complete insight was given about the different automation methods using visual videos. The session was very interactive and informative with practical implementation videos of satellite tracking. The session ended with certificate distribution to the participants.

Outcome of the event

As a result of this FDP, the participants were able to enhance their knowledge in various field of IOT applications. It was a knowledge enriched event where the participants were able to explore various aspects of applications with illustrations and also opportunities shared by the resource persons from IISC,ISRO,DRDO and IIT, Bangalore
