Guest Lecture on ‘Applications of Calculus in Engineering’

A Guest lecture on Applications of Calculus in Engineering was organized by the Department of Mathematics, MVJCE, on 25^th February, 2023. The lecture was organized at M V Jayaraman Auditorium for the first year students.

The Guest Speaker for this Lecture was Prof. Veerappa Gowda, TIFR CAM, Bangalore. 750 First Year students from various sections of Physics and Chemistry cycles, and faculty members attended this session.

The session started with an Invocation song by First Year student Anushka from ‘H’ section, followed by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Dr. P. Mahabaleswarappa, Principal, MVJCE, welcomed the audience and the Guest Speaker. He highlighted the importance of learning about the applications of Calculus. He highlighted the fact that Calculus is one of the most important aspects of Engineering

Prof. Niranjan L, HOD, Department of Mathematics, introduced the Chief Guest Prof. Veerappa Gowda, to the audience.

The Chief Guest Prof. Veerappa Gowda gave some applications (Standard Examples) of Calculus which models classical problems like populations growth, weather forecasting, 3D plotting using calculus etc. He gave a brief explanation on the usage of Calculus in the 3D printing of 2D images. He gave a brief modelling of the 3D plot using various software. Through the examples, the students could understand the importance of correct modelling, and why they need to study differential equations in modern Mathematics. Further, they realized that obtaining the solution is not enough to understand the problem and provide the right answers to the applications. In addition to the above concepts, the Speaker also introduced the students to the numerical methods used in Calculus. He gave a brief explanation on the identification of roots of higher order polynomials, which would result in the solution of various higher order differential equations. He explained the importance of Calculus and its application.

After the presentation, a Q&A session was conducted where the Guest Speaker addressed the queries of the attendees.

The Chief Guest, along with the Principal and HOD (Mathematics), honoured the winners of the event ‘Math Mastery’, with cash prizes and certificates. Participation certificates were given to all the students who participated in the event.

The session concluded with vote of thanks by First Year student Tanirika from ‘D’ section, who thanked the MVJCE Management, Principal, Vice Principal and COE of MVJCE, for having given this opportunity to conduct such an interesting and useful Guest Lecture. Outcome of the Event

The Guest Lecture enabled the students to enhance their knowledge about Calculus. This will make the students more interested in going deeper into the subject. It will also encourage them to explore and understand the need for Calculus in their respective Engineering branches.
