A Guest Lecture on Applications of differential equations in Engineering was organized by the Department of Mathematics, MVJCE, on 21st January 2023. The Lecture was organized at M V Jayaraman Auditorium for the First-year students.

The Guest Speaker for this Lecture was Prof. Thirupathi Gudi, Professor, IISc., Bangalore. All the first-year students and faculty members attended the session.

Caption correction: performing Invocation Song

The session started with an Invocation song by First year student Pranathi from F section, followed by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa, Principal MVJCE, welcomed the audience and the Guest Speaker. He stressed on the importance of learning the applications of differential equations. He highlighted the fact that differential equations are one of the most important parts of Engineering.

The Chief Guest Prof. Thirupathi Gudi gave some standard examples (applications) of ordinary differential equations which models the classical problems like: populations growth, spring-mass-dashpot system etc. Through the examples, the students could understand the importance of correct modelling, and why they need to study differential equations in modern Mathematics. Further, they realized that obtaining the solution is not enough to understand the problem and provide right answers to the applications. In fact, most of the time, closed form solutions will not be available, and hence the need to understand differential equations qualitatively and otherwise. This requires a good knowledge of analysis, linear algebra, functional analysis, geometry etc.

After the presentation a Q&A session was conducted, where the Guest Speaker addressed the queries of the attendees.

The Chief Guest, along with the Principal and HOD (Mathematics), honoured the winners of the event Calculations using Calculator, with cash prizes and certificates. Participation certificates were given to all the students who had participated in the event.

The session concluded with vote of thanks by Prof. Poojashree R to MVJCE Management, Principal, Vice Principal and COE, for having given this opportunity to conduct the Guest lecture. A special mention to ITHELPDESK and team for their technical support during the session.

Outcome of the Event

The Lecture enabled the students to enhance their knowledge of differential equations. This will help them develop interest to learn the subject more thoroughly. It will also encourage the students to explore and understand the need for differential equations in their respective Engineering branches.
