The Department of Mathematics, MVJ College of Engineering, organized a Guest Lecture on ‘Artificial Intelligence and Numerical Methods in Data Science: Recent trends and Future Outlook’, on 2nd July, 2022.

The Guest Speaker of the event was Dr. G N Mohapatra, Principal Scientist, CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute, NAL Belur Campus, Bangalore. The event was conducted in Dr. M V Jayaraman Auditorium, from 10:45 am to 1.00 pm. It was attended by all the First Year Engineering students from MVJCE.

The session started with an invocation song by first year students Ms. Supreetha Vikram and Ms. Mahi Naresh Hegde, followed by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries.

Ms. Pooja Sriram welcomed the Guest Speaker, the Principal, Vice-Principal, Registrar & Controller of the Examinations, HODs, Staff and Students to the programme.

Ms. Poojashree R, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, MVJCE, introduced the Chief Guest Dr. G N Mohapatra to the gathering.

The Speaker started the session with the basic definition of Data Science. He explained about Science Paradigms.

Dr. Mohapatra generated a lot of interest among our students on how Data Science and Machine Learning are helping us to prepare various analyses, mathematically. He threw light on how different types of mathematical equations are used for analysis. The Speaker enlightened the students about the software packages that are available commercially, and open source for solving differential equations in Data Science.

The Speaker then spoke about the different polymers and their durability, and about what type of materials are used in rockets, nowadays. He made a mention about the recent launch of PSLV C-53, and about the contributions of his team towards this launch. He discussed about the aspect of simulation in mathematical representation, with the example of a car crash. Then he introduced Machine Learning with the practical process of rainfall data. He also showed the recent research images and bar graphs that are used to analyse climate changes, where Data Science is applied to get the report.

He explained about the various analytical and numerical methods that are available for solving differential equations, and how analytical methods are more efficient than numerical methods.

He presented a lot of differential calculus equations that connect Data Science with Machine Learning. These equations are used to address real life critical and complex problems.

Finally, the students posed questions to the Speaker, and Dr. G N Mohapatra cleared their doubts.

In the end, Ms. Katherine John Kennedy rendered the vote of thanks to the Management, Resource Speaker, Principal, Vice-Principal and Board of Management for the opportunity given, and to HODs, faculty members and students for their active participation in the Lecture.

The Speaker offered his constant support to the faculty and students in future, through continuing interactions and ongoing discussions. This programme was technically coordinated by Prof. B Sudhakar, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, MVJCE. The Mathematics Department offered thanks to the ITHELPDESK for giving good technical support.

Outcome of the Guest Lecture

The Guest Lecture programme was very useful to the students as well as teachers, to build and strengthen their knowledge in Data Science and its applications, by using Artificial Intelligence. They also learnt about the Applications of Data Science in Machine Learning.
