The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organized a Guest Lecture on the topic ‘Human vs Machine Intelligence’, for the 3rd, 5th and 7th semester students of the department, on 10th December 2022, under the supervision of the Head of the Department – ECE, Dr. I. Hameem Shanavas. The event was held at Rajalakshmi Seminar Hall. The expert speaker was Mr. Ajit Clarence, Senior Member of Technical Staff, AMD, and also an Alumnus of the1996 Batch.

Mr. Ajith Clarence is an expert in Debugging and fixing ML/HPC issues, and Automation of power system utility products. He has worked on SOC development of machine vision industrial cameras, and IOT based smart plugs and handlooms. He has three patents to his name, and worked on product development of electronic locking systems using wireless solutions.

Dr. Mahabaleswarappa, Principal, MVJCE and Dr. I. Hameem Shanavas, Professor, and HOD of ECE Department, welcomed the industry expert with a bouquet. The Principal briefed the students regarding the Guest Lecture.

The need for Machine Learning with real time applications is a key area. The expert speaker Mr.Ajit Clarence started his talk by giving an introduction about Machine Learning. He interacted with the students, asking questions about Machine Learning and its applications. Then he explained the differences between Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, the two buzz words in the current market. He went on to explain why Machine Learning is required.

Later he covered various use cases where Machine Learning is applicable. The use cases were real time, like Recommendation Systems, Prediction based on history (Real Estate), etc. He continued his talk, dealing with Machine Learning Techniques which include

  • Regression
  • Classification
  • Clustering

The concepts were explained with examples. He mentioned about the various algorithms such as K-NN, PCA and its applications.

He then spoke about the difference between Machine Learning and Deep Learning. Deep Learning is a broader family of Machine Learning and its applications. Further, he enlightened the students on the software implementation of algorithms. He focused on Python and R language used for building Machine Learning applications. He showed an example of Python code and explained it. Linear Regression and Logistic Regression Python code as well as R code were explained, as an example for the same.

The participants exhibited a keen interest in learning the concepts and methodologies, and gave satisfactory feedback at the end of the session. They also suggested that the duration of the session could be increased, so that they could explore Research options on the same topic.
