The Department of Chemistry, MVJCE, organized a Guest Lecture on 03.03.2023, for first semester Chemistry cycle students, at MV Jayaraman Auditorium, at 10:00 am.

Dr. Jayanta Haldar, Professor Antimicrobial Research Laboratory New Chemistry Unit (NCU) and School of Advanced Materials (SAMAT) Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) Bangalore, INDIA presented a Lecture on ‘Smart Biomaterials’, on 3rd March 2023. The Lecture was started with the prayer song.

Speaker started the session by taking the definition of Biomaterials. He stated the importance of biomaterials by giving a various examples and where it is applied. he also explained the various challenge faced by implanting the biomaterials on devices. Following points are discussed in the session.

  • Healthcare-acquired infections (nosocomial infections): are infections that have been caught in a hospital but are secondary to the original condition of the patient, which was not present or incubated at the time of admission.
  • In USA 1.7 million infections and 99,000 associated deaths each year! Annual cost: $4.5 billion to over $11 billion
  • Of every 100 hospitalized patients at any given time, 7 in developed and 10 in developing countries will acquire at least one HAI. ” >25% of these HAIs are directly associated with Biomaterial-associated Infection (BAI). ” ~3,00,00,000 urinary catheters and 50,00,000 central venous catheter (CVCs) are inserted annually, with infection rates between 10−30% and 3−8%, respectively.

Speaker spoke about the history of biomaterials, mentioned about infectious diseases and various types of drugs and how the drug delivery will happen when its injected to humans

Outcome of the Event

At the end of the session, the students understood the importance of Smart Biomaterials and their scope of implementation. After finishing the session students raised the queries and the speaker addressed them all.
