Report about Five-day FDP on ‘CSIR Sponsored Artificial Intelligence & Computer Vision Solution of Edge Devices (IoT)

A Five-day FDP on ‘CSIR Sponsored Artificial Intelligence & Computer Vision Solution of Edge Devices (IoT)’was organized by the ECE Departmentfrom 1stFebruary 2021 to 5th February 2021, through online mode. The FDP program received an overwhelming response, with more than 40 participants from various institutes/colleges. This FDP was planned for 5 days,to include technical hands-on sessions as well as lecture Sessions on topics likeEarth observation system and Geospatial Information. The FDP was initiated by Mr. RamachandraHebbar, Scientist SG, RRSC, ISRO Bangalore.

ABOUT THE FDP

The program was presided over by Dr. P Mahabaleshwarappa (Principal, MVJCE), Dr. M Brindha (Vice Principal, MVJCE) and Prof. Vaman B Gudi (CoE& Registrar, MVJCE). The session started at 10:30 am with 50 participants including Faculty Members from various departments of MVJCE and other institutes.

This FDP designed with state-of-the-art concepts of AI, Machine Learning, and IoT technology comprised of theory as well as hands-on sessions. Half of the program was designed for theory, use–case demonstrations, and research-oriented discussions, which will be helpful in understanding the process. The remaining 50% of the course was devoted to applications and practical implementation (hands-on). In short, this FDP covered AI, Machine Learning concepts, Types of Learning, Applications of Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Block chain applications in areas such as Internet of Things (IoT), by experts from reputed Industries and academic institutions, with an aim to improving the understanding of this highly technical field. This will, in turn, improve the quality of teaching which will motivate the students to take up the challenges in this interdisciplinary field.

Day 1 (01.02.2021): Session I (Inauguration Ceremony)

The course was intended to make the participants aware and be able to work on this emerging area. Around 40 participants attended this course to gain knowledge in the area of designing projects and applications, using AI. The program commenced on 1st February 2021 on Webex Meet app with an introductory and motivational speech by Dr. P Mahabaleshwarappa (Principal, MVJCE).

At the beginning of the inaugural session of the FDP, Dr. Tamilarsi, Associate Professor, Electronics and Communication Department, MVJCE, Co-coordinator of the course, welcomed the Chief Guest and other dignitaries, and briefly introduced the course to the participants. She highlighted the need for organizing such courses, to enable the participants to learn new technologies. The coordinator briefly enlisted the application of AI in our daily life and the advantages of using the technology. She explained that the main aim of this course was to present hands-on sessions for the implementation of theoretical concepts.

In this session, the lecture was delivered by Mr. Ramachandra Hebbar, Scientist SG, RRSC, ISRO Bangalore. He defined the basic terms related to Earth observation system and Geospatial Information. He also discussed about Object based classification based on machine learning, mobile applications in season field data collections, cloud sourcing, pattern recognition techniques, data fusion using machine learning and spatio temporal analysis of the lakes of Bangalore and research avenues in geo spatial technologies.

Day 1 (01.02.2021) Session III

The afternoon session was given by Dr. A Athif Shah, Founder/Chairman, ABE semiconductor Designs, Chennai. He started the session with a presentation on the topic Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, where he explained the concept of Deep Learning, Neural Network Architecture. He also gave a brief idea about the Activation Functions and the steps involved in CNN architecture. He explained the range of these Activation Functions, along with their plots. He has explained the need of Convolution in Image Processing by taking real-world example also, moreover he discussed the convolution layers in LeNet model which was inspired by Lechon, 1998,” and Gradient-based learning applied to document recognition.

Day 2 (02.02.2021): Session IV

This session was conducted by Vinod P V, Scientist, RRSC,ISRO Bangalore. He gave a lecture on Artificial Intelligence for remote sensing data analysis, Applications of AI in agriculture field, what is machine learning and its classification. He gave an interesting talk on the basis of Convolutional neural network. Moreover, he discussed about the recent project that is being carried on in ISRO about Automatic classification of urban vegetation from high resolution satellite images using deep learning techniques and AI based mobile app for identifying land use changes in urban environment. Finally, he gave an enlightening talk on Deep learning and edge computing.

Day 2 (02.02.2021): Session V

In this session, the lecture was given by Mrs. SadhaGopalakrishna, Project Manager, Philips, Bengaluru. She gave a talk on software development life cycle – SDLC. She explained about Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) which is a process used by the software industry to design, develop and test high quality software. She spoke about how SDLC aims to produce a high-quality software that meets or exceeds customer expectations, reaches completion within times and cost estimates. She also elaborated on the different development methodologies and phases of SDLC, water fall versus Agile Electronic systems and IoT and about the ongoing projects she is handling in Philips.

Day 3 (03.02.2021): Session VI

Dr. Sheeba Jenifer Sujit, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, USA, handled this session on Artificial intelligence in Medical Imaging. She explained the role of AI in medical imaging and gave an overview of AI pipeline. She shared details of the real time research which she has carried out on automated image quality evaluation of structural brain MRI using an ensemble of deep learning network. In her talk, she gave a brief explanation on data augmentation. She also enlightened the participants about her recent research on development of machine learning enabled android mobile app for automated brain shunt valve recognition. She apprised the participants about the advanced medical imaging tools available.

Day 4 (04.02.2021): Session VII and VIII

On the fourth day of the FDP, the presentation was given by Dr. Mohan Raj, Data Scientist, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, both in the forenoon and afternoon. He started the session by giving a brief about Artificial Intelligence and how Machine Learning is related to it. He also stressed on the fact that Machine Learning is present everywhere – in speech recognition, health monitoring, Stock Market Prediction, IoT Analytics etc. After this, he explained about the different types of Machine Learning available and how a model can be trained to classify human activity from sensor data. He explaining the concept of Deep Learning with python and what is the background knowledge involved in doing this. He elaborated on the concept of artificial intelligence, supervised and unsupervised learning, pattern recognition, and how these concepts are applied in various real time engineering research applications. He also pointed out how the three terms Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning are interrelated to each other, and how Deep Neural Networks can be trained and what are the steps involved in training the networks.

The afternoon session was hands-on, where he explained how to work with NumPy with basic calculations. The participants performed hands on NumPy. Moreover the speaker taught how to solve real time problems efficiently using machine learning algorithms.

Day 5 (05.02.2021): Session IX

This session was given by Dr. Sishaj P Simon, Associate Professor, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirapalli-Tamil Nadu. He gave a thought-provoking talk on Biological neural

network to artificial neural network and the Classification of ANN, different types of Standard activation functions, back propagation neural network. He showed deeplearning NeuralLSTM tool using Matlab. He explained how LSTM RNN does a better job at predicting the weekly movements and howLSTM RNN was able to predict volatile movements in the true data. Finally he showed some applications of LSTM like time series prediction, speech recognition etc.

Day 5 (05.02.2021): Session X

This session was handled by Dr. P. Ganesh Kumar, Director, International R&D Linyi Top Network Co. Ltd., Linyi Shandong Provience, China. In this session, he talked about Agricultural Robots – how companies are developing and programming autonomous robots to handle essential agricultural tasks such as harvesting crops at a higher volume and faster pace than human laborers. He gave an idea about Crop and Soil Monitoring – how companies are leveraging computer vision and deep-learning algorithms to process data captured by drones and/or software-based technology to monitor crop and soil health. Moreover, he discussed about Predictive Analytics – how Machine learning models are being developed to track and predict various environmental impacts on crop yield such as weather changes.

OUTCOME OF TH FDP

Budding researchers and research supervisors got valuable inputs about Artificial intelligence and deep learning thrust area and this will enable them to carry out interdisciplinary research in various engineering applications.

The FDP was a great success, as all the participants were very satisfied which fact was reflected from the excellent comments given by them in the chatbox. The response from the participants about the FDP was tremendously good and positive, and as per the feedback, they want to attend more such hands-on workshops in future.
