The Department of Chemical Engineering organized a One-day Skill Development Program on ‘Insights into analytical instrumentation of the future’, for 8th, 6th & 4th semester Chemical Engineering students, on 18th May 2022, at Seminar Hall 5. The skill development program (SDP) was organized in collaboration with the Chariton Research Institute Private Limited, Bangalore. Dr. K.J. Balasubramani, Founder and Director of Chariton Research Institute Private Limited, Bangalore was the Guest Speaker for the skill development program.

About the Speaker

Dr. K.J. Balasubramani was the Guest Speaker for the skill development program. He is Founder and Director of Chariton Research Institute Private Limited, Bangalore. He completed Masters in Analytical Chemistry and obtained PhD in Analytical Chemistry and Metallurgy from National Metallurgical Laboratory with CSIR fellowship. He also served as Divisional Head, Shriram Institute for Industrial Research, Bangalore for about 25 years. He has 30 years’ experience in the field of Research and Development, Quality control, Quality Assurance and Analytical method development with various product exposures. Having complete exposure to analytical instruments like HPLZ, LCMS/MS, Column Chromatography, GC, GCMS, GC Headspace, HPLTC, AAS, ELISA, FTIR, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer and COD Analyzer. He has published research papers in peer reviewed journals and given technical presentations at many universities and institutions, and he has a full knowledge of ISO, EMS, OSHAS, USFDA and other regulatory requirements.

A Brief Account of the Lecture

The session started with the welcome address by Dr. Mahabaleswarappa, Principal, MVJCE. He welcomed the audience and the Guest Speaker. He underlined the necessity of the skill development program and spoke about the significance of analytical instrumentation of the future for Chemical Engineers. He elaborated the current trends in industrial instrumentation for chemical and allied industries.

The skill development program goal was to enhance the skills as chemical engineers, understanding how these instruments work and how to handle them is critical; this will help them to improve their technical skills during placement. The skill development program endeavored to enlighten the students on basic, advanced, and analytical instrumentation, by providing them the essential course material complemented by a hands-on session on Instrumentation methods.

The session was hosted by Ms. Monisha A of 8th Semester, who started the session with a Welcome Note to our Guest and to all the students and faculty members of the Chemical Engineering Department. The Guest was introduced to the gathering by Prof. Samraj S, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, MVJCE, Bangalore, after which the Guest Speaker Dr. K.J. Balasubramani took to the stage and started the skill development program.

The skill development program was split into three sessions for basics and interactive and two sessions for practice and mock interview.

The first session which was conducted from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, educated the students on skill development program – Insights into analytical instrumentation of the future. The second session was conducted from 11:00 am to 11.30 am, here the students were interacted about Chemical Engineering instrumentation of the future prospective. The third session was conducted from 11:30 am to 12.30 pm. In this session students gained knowledge about problems/shutdown while conducting research with the help of analytical instruments in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, textile and petroleum industries were dealt with in this session.

The practice session – 1 was conducted from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. In this session, the students gained hands-on experience on Enhancing technical interview skills for the opportunities in Chemical Engineering sectors. Practice session – 2 was started from 3.00 pm to 3.50 pm, Students gained hands on experience of Mock interview session for technical and personal rounds for students.

The session was followed by a questionnaire and students interacted with the Speaker, expressing their views on analytical instrumentation of the future and job opportunities in chemical industries. The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks by student Mr. Shrihari, 8th semester of Chemical Engineering.

Outcome of the Event

The skill development program is planning to educate students on the latest instrumentation techniques for the future in various chemical and allied industries. Also, an in-depth understanding of various analytical instrumentation to carry out independent research in the areas of Chemical Engineering and solving problems encountered during operation and maintenance. The key skills learned through this program will enhance the student’s technical knowledge which will help them to clear the technical rounds of interview during placement activities.
