The Department of Computer Science and Engineering had organized a one-day Workshop on ‘Improving Interview skills and Resume Building’, for 6th semester Computer Science students, on 4th June 2022, at Smt. Rajalakshmi Seminar Hall. The Workshop was presided over by Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa (Principal, MVJCE), Dr. M Brindha (Vice-Principal, MVJCE) and Prof. Tamilarisi (HOD, CSE). Mrs. Monika Anand was the Guest Speaker for the Workshop.

About the Speaker

Mrs. Monika Anand is an astute, result-oriented professional, with over 18 years of experience in key areas like Personality Development, Life Skill education. Capacity Building, Leadership Development and Project Management and Documentation. She is currently working as Senior Faculty – Soft skills at Jain University. She has worked as a trainer in the corporate sector as well as academic institutions. She has successfully coached and mentored more than 1500 graduate and post graduate management students. She is a member of the I-NLP forum for Practitioners and HR professionals. She also holds the position of Forum Manager for NGO meetings on diverse themes like Entrepreneurship, Jugaad Innovation and Community-based Organization projects in the urban and semi urban setups.

A brief Account of the Session

The session started with welcome address by Dr. Mahabaleswarappa, Principal, MVJCE. He welcomed the audience and the Guest Speaker. He underlined the necessity for the Workshop and spoke about the significance of improving soft skills, stressing on the fact that improving these skills will benefit the students in getting good placements.

The goal of the Workshop was to motivate and guide our pre-final year students to face interviews and to adopt the right body language while facing an interview. The Workshop also aimed at guiding the students on how they can improve their language skills and helping students with their Resume preparation.

The session was hosted by Ms. Amipra Srivastava, 6th semester, CSE. She welcomed the Chief Guest, the students of 6th Semester and faculty members of the Computer Science and Engineering department. The Chief Guest was introduced to the gathering by Ms. Akshita Koul, 6th semester, CSE, after which the Guest Speaker Mrs. Monika Anand took over and began the Workshop. The Workshop was conducted in 2 batches, with 125 students in each batch.

The first session which was conducted from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm, educated the students about elevator pitch which is basically a means to convey your idea and convince the listener, within a minute. The speaker guided the students on how to improve their reading, writing, communication and listening skills. The ideas to set goals that follow the SMART criteria were discussed. Complex issues like how a student must talk about his/her strengths, weaknesses etc. were also discussed.

The speaker had shared a questionnaire consisting of 75 questions with the students, and on answering these questions, the students could get an overview on what kind of persons they are and which areas they need to work on and improve. The speaker insisted that all the students must create a LinkedIn account and update their achievements here on a regular basis, as most of the placement opportunities come through LinkedIn. She underlined the importance of students getting involved in doing projects and uploading it on a live platform, as this will help them to get placed in good companies. She gave valuable tips on how to create an impression that makes an impact on the interviewer.

The second session was conducted from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm for the next set of students. The welcome address was given by Mr. Santhosh, 6th semester, CSE, and Mr. Siddhanth, 6th semester, CSE, introduced the Speaker. In this session also the speaker followed the same program flow as she had done for the first batch of students. The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks by student Mr. Santhosh, 6th semester, CSE.

Outcome of the Event

The session motivated and guided the prefinal year students to face placement interviews with confidence, sporting the right body language, improving their communication skills and Resume building. The session was very useful to the students since they got an insight into various facts about how to prepare themselves for placements. The speaker gave a lot of inputs to the students on interview questions and how to spruce up their resume. Overall, the session was very informative and useful.
