Guest Lecture on Applications of Numerical methods in Engineering

Dr. G N Mohapatra, Principal scientist, CSIR 4Pi, Bangalore, giving a lecture on ‘Applications of Numerical methods in Engineering’ at MVJCE.

The Chief Guest, Dr. G N Mohapatra gave some applications (Standard Examples) of numerical methods which models the classical problems like: populations growth, weather forecasting, 3D plotting using calculus etc. He gave brief explanation on usage of numerical methods in modelling the weather forecast system. He told how to model a problem using numerical methods in various software. The examples helped the students to understand the importance of correct modelling, and why they need to study numerical methods in modern Mathematics. Further, they realized that obtaining the solution is not enough to understand the problem and provide right answers to the applications. In addition to the above concepts, the speaker also introduced the students to the numerical methods used in calculus. He explained the identification of roots of higher order polynomials, which would result in the solution of various higher order differential equation. The speaker emphasized on various numerical methods and its application.

After the presentation, Question and Answer session was conducted where the Guest Speaker addressed to the queries of the attendees. The session concluded with vote of thanks by the first year student Ashmitha from I section.

Outcome of the Event

The guest lecture helped the students to have more knowledge about Numerical methods. This would lead an individual to gain interest in learning the subject more accurately. This also encourages an individual to explore and understand the need of numerical methods in their respective Engineering branches.
