Guest Lecture on XPS and XRD: Fundamentals and Applications

The Department of Chemistry, MVJCE, organized a Guest Lecture on 28.01.2023, for first semester Chemistry cycle students, at Smt. Rajalakshmi Jayaraman Seminar Hall, at 11:00 am.

Dr. Parthasarathi Bera, Principal Scientist, NAL, Bengaluru, presented a Lecture on XPS and XRD: Fundamentals and Applications, on 28th January, 2023. The Lecture was on X ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and X ray Diffraction Spectroscopy (XRD) – introduction to these, their instrumentation and applications. The speaker explained how analysis is done for various elements, with the help of these techniques. He said that XPS is a powerful measurement technique because it shows not only what elements are present, but also what other elements they are bonded with. XRD technique is a common technique that determines a sample’s composition or crystalline structure. For larger crystals such as macromolecules and inorganic compounds, it can be used to determine the structure of atoms within the sample.

The Lecture was very interesting and informative. The highlight of the Lecture was the explanation on the various areas where XPS and XRD are used. The Lecture ended with a Question and Answer session, when the Guest Speaker answered the questions posed by the students.

Outcome of the Event

At the end of the session, the students understood the importance of XPS and XRD in the analysis of compounds and the areas where they are implemented.
