The Department of Chemical Engineering, MVJCE, organised AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) Sponsored One-Week Online FDP on ‘Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Chemical Engineering: Recent trends and Future Outlook’, from 31st August to 4th September, 2021.
The objective of the FDP was to enrich faculty members with the developing technological scenarios in the fields of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, the most recent developments in these fields, and state-of-the-art concepts in the Chemical Process industry.

A Brief Account of the Lecture:
Day 1: Session 1 (9.00 am – 11.00 am)
The inaugural session started with the welcoming address by the Event Coordinator, Dr. Manisha Bal. She touched upon the program details and the criteria for securing the certificates. She then requested the HOD of Chemical Engineering Department, Prof. AthiraAsokan, to deliver the Welcome Address and the Principal of MVJCE, Dr. Mahabaleswarappa, to deliver the Inaugural Speech.In his address, the Principal, MVJ College of Engineering, pointed out the importance of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the field of Chemical Engineering. He also welcomed the Chief GuestDr. Ravindra D Gudi, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay. Dr. Ravindra D Gudidelivered a talk on ‘Digitalization, AI and ML: Exciting opportunities in Engineering’.He enlightened the participants about emerging topics in sensor diversity, and spoke about what digitalization is, the importance of IoT and how it impacts everything, and the significant opportunities of digitalization.The first session ended with the vote of thanks by Prof. Chaitra D from the Department of Chemical Engineering, MVJCE.
Day 1: Session 2 (11.30 am – 1.30 pm)
Session 2 of Day 1 was presented by Dr. Ashutosh Yadav, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Jammu, J & K. He discussed about the application of Machine Learning for multiphase reactors.The Professor elaborated on the revolution of Artificial Intelligence in Chemical industries and imposed the role of statistics. He established the distinction between traditional programming and Machine learning. He explained the role of Artificial Intelligence in Oil and Gas industries and the application of Machine learning in multiphase reactors, with detailed case studies.
Day 1: Session 3 (2.00 pm – 4.00 pm) – Stress Management
Day 1 was ended with a Stress Management session by Mr. Chandrakant Deoda, Sahaja Yoga Meditation. It was an interactive session. He stressed on practicing healthy habits on a daily basis, to attain better physical and mental health outcomes. The participants understood the various dimensions of wellness like Physical, Emotional, Intellectual etc. Effective stress management and meditation are important tools that will help us overcome stress in our life, so that we can be happier, and more productive.
Day 2: Session 4 (9.00 am – 11.00 am)
Session 4 of Day 2 was by Dr. M Venkata Kirthiga, Associate Professor, Department of EEE, NIT Tiruchirappalli. Dr. M Venkata Kirthiga delivered a lecture on ‘Role of Artificial Intelligence in Fuel Cell management’.The Professor introduced the session focusing on the current industrial revolution, and elaborated on the essence of Industry 4.0 and the trends in automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies and processes. She also threw light on the basics of fuel cell and the role of Artificial Intelligence in fuel cell management. She spoke in detail about valid data efficiency and stability of fuel cell, their different sources, and customized controller in the fuel cell system.
Day 2: Session 5 (11.30 am – 1.30 pm)
Session 5 of Day 2 was handled by Dr. Anil Kumar, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute, Bangalore. Dr. Anil Kumar discussed the application of Data Science in packets, and protocols and attacks in Cyber space in relation to the Chemical Process industry.
Day 2: Session 6 (2.00 pm – 4.00 pm)
Session 6 of Day 2 was delivered by Dr. M Nabil, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Tirupati. Dr. Nabil discussed about Machine Learning applications in Chemical Engineering. He shared his valuable inputs on the phases of AI in Chemical Engineering, application of ML – soft sensing, global and local modelling, Ore Quality prediction, process monitoring, Optimization and Control. The participants benefitted greatly from his expertise in the Chemical Engineering field.
Day 3: Session 7 (9.00 am – 11.00 am)
The session 7 of Day 3 was given by Mr. Sanjay Venugopal, Senior Technologist, Yokogawa IA Technologies India Ltd., Bangalore. The Speaker started the session with a talk on the Data Analytics techniques that have been deployed in Chemical Process industries since the 90s, for Advanced Controls and Optimization.He explained about the possible real problems that may arise in the process, and the key solution with advance techniques and software demo. He also explained in detail, the advanced PC / Model predictive control action and performance. He gave insights on distributed control advance, process control and linear programming optimization.
Day 3: Session 8 (11.30 am – 1.30 pm)
Session 8 of Day 3 was handled by Dr. Gyanendra Nath Mahapatra, Senior Scientist, CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute. He spoke about the teaching ethics which are to be incorporated in the AI course. The Professor explained in detail about the technical challenges in using big data in day-to-day functions as a Chemical Engineer, and how to overcome these challenges. The basics of Machine learning and Ven diagram were also discussed by Dr. Gyanendra Nath Mahapatra.The Professor elaborated on the machine learning techniques for big data, for a Chemical Engineer.
Day 3: Session 9 (2.00 pm – 4.00 pm)
In Session 9 of Day 3, the lecture was delivered by Dr. Konduri Aditya, Assistant Professor, Department of Computationaland Data Sciences, IISc, Bangalore. The content of scientific computing was explained so well by the Professor that the participants got a clear understanding of the subject. He gave detailed inputs on turbulent flow simulations, followed by a brief introduction to parallel computing. He highlighted various applications (like Hypersonic vehicles) in the Energy sector. The Professor’s inputs on Machine learning techniques were very informative, as he gave a lot of examples of deep learning.
Day 4: Session 10 (9.00 am – 11.00 am)
Session 10 of Day 4, handled by Dr. Ananth Govind Rajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IISc, Bangalore, was on ‘Introduction to Boosting Algorithms in Machine Learning’. Dr. Ananth spoke about machine learning algorithm categorization, decision tree in ML, Bootstrap aggregation in ML, training and testing using K fold validation and gradient boosting in Chemical Engineering applications.
Day 4: Session 11 (11.30 am – 1.30 pm)
The Day 4 Session 11 started with a Lecture by Mr. Ravi Kiran, Senior Process Engineer, Grace Division Chemical India Private Limited, Chennai, on ‘Digital Twin Application for Steel Refining process: Modelling and Optimization’. Mr. Ravi Kiran discussed about digital twin, secondary steel making process, casting process, CFD process of ladle process, chemistry validation of ladle process, temperature tracker ladle process model, comparative decision support problem and mathematical modelling of ladle process and optimization.
Day 4: Session 12 (2.00 pm – 4.00 pm)
Session 12 of Day 4 started with a talk by Dr. Alka Kumari, Scientist, CSIR – IICT, Hyderabad, on ‘Process Design and Simulation: Fundamentals and Techniques’. Dr. Alka explained with process and Instrumentation diagrams and process simulation, using Aspen Packages.
Day 5: Session 13 (9.00 am – 11.00 am)
Session 13 of Day 5 was by Mr. Ravi Kiran, Senior Process Engineer, Grace Division Chemical India Private Limited, Chennai, on “Predicting right feed mix to control the product quality based on predictive analytics”. He gave an overview of analytical tools and their role in process industries. Technical and programming skills were shared, step by step, using MAT Lab software. The procedure to fit an equation and linear model with the available data was also performed with a live demonstration.
Day 5: Session 14 (11.30 am – 1.30 pm)
This last Session of the FDP was delivered by Mr. Srisandeep Adiga, APC Engineer, Yokogawa IA Technologies India Ltd., Bangalore. He emphasized on how AI/ML techniques can transform Dynamic Modelling for Advanced Controls and Optimization in Chemical Process industries. Mr. Adiga explained about what Machine learning is and where we can use Machine learning. He made the distinction between traditional modelling and Machine learning. He spoke about the different stages in ML and also explained the method of least square very effectively, and how data are implemented using Python.
Day 5: Session 15 (2.00 pm – 4.00 pm) – Valedictory Session
The Valedictory speech was given by the Principal, MVJCE, Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa, who appreciated all the eminent speakers who spoke on the 5 days of the FDP. He also applauded the participants for their active participation. Prof. AthiraAsokan, HOD, Chemical Engineering, MVJCE, conveyed the vote of thanks to all participants. The final vote of thanks was given by the Coordinator of this ATAL FDP, Dr. Manisha Bal, Assistant Professor, CH, MVJCE. The event organizers are grateful to all the guest speakers for effectively showcasing the scope of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the field of Chemical Engineering. Outcome of the Event
The FDP enabled the attendees to strengthen and reinforce their knowledge in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The Sessions also kindled an interest around the broad array of research opportunities for Chemical Engineers in the fields of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The attendees were also gifted with information and knowledge about optimization techniques and data analytics.
