Title of the talk: “Enhanced Safety of Flight with Engine Health Monitoring”

Speaker: Dr A N Viswanatha Rao, Sc H & OS (Ret), GTRE, DRDO

The Department of Aeronautical Engineering is organising a guest lecture titled “Enhanced Safety of Flight with Engine Health Monitoring” by Dr. A. N. Viswanatha Rao, Sc H & OS (Retd), GTRE, DRDO on 18-8-25 (10.30 – 12.30 P.M). The talk highlights the importance of gas turbine engines as flight safety-critical systems. With the demand for high thrust-to-weight ratios, aero engines are designed with lower safety margins, making them vulnerable to fatigue due to cyclic loading and vibration. The talk will focus on the need for structural health monitoring (SHM) to ensure operational reliability and safety. It will cover key aspects such as engine health sensors, measurement techniques, and fault diagnosis algorithms. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in feature extraction and predictive diagnostics will be discussed in detail. Participants will also gain insight into condition-based maintenance (CBM) and emerging technologies like smart sensors and digital twins. The session aims to enhance understanding of how health monitoring ensures safe and efficient aero engine operation.
