A Guest lecture on Advanced Practices in Structural Engineering was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering on 21st August 2023 in seminar hall 4. There were 64 participants including 50 Students and 14 Faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department.
The session was related to forensic Structural Engineering which involves the study of structure and determining the causes of failure of the structure. Forensic structural engineering is evolving in India into a designated field of professional practices to find the causes of structural failures. It also highlights the engineering investigations, rendering opinions and giving expert testimony in judicial proceedings. The main objective of this guest lecture was to provide information about various diagnostic devices used for forensic investigations.
The guest lecture commenced with the formal arrival of the esteemed dignitaries onto the podium. Among the distinguished attendees were Mr. Sudarshan S Iyengar, Senior Director of NDT at Stedrant Technoclinic Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, Dr. Suresh Babu V, the Principal of MVJCE, and Dr. N. Vetrivel, the Head of the Civil Engineering Department at MVJCE.
Guest Speaker, Mr. Sudarshan S Iyengar delivering lecture on Advanced Practices in Structural Engineering
Dr. Suresh Babu V, principal, extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest and all participants in his opening address. Following this, Dr. N. Vetrivel provided a comprehensive introduction to the guest speaker, shedding light on their background and expertise.
Mr. Sudarshan S Iyengar, Senior Director, NDT, Stedrant Technoclinic pvt. ltd. then took over the session. He started his session by explaining about various non-destructive equipment used in the site. The principle and application of the rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse velocity test, half-cell potentiometer and profometer were explained with the help of pictures. The usage of field permeability apparatus, endoscope, infrared camera, thermography, and cross-hole semi logging test was also explained. The semi destructive equipment used for defect diagnosis of concrete – Windsor probe test, CAPO test, pulling of inserts, core drilling equipment were also explained in detail. The case studies on failure analysis of irrigation structure through NDT and SDT equipment was very interesting. The load tests on PSC girder ( Andhra Pradesh) was explained in detail with risks met in site and the timely actions taken to mitigate the same. The second case study was about the repair of damaged bridge deck. The steps taken in site to repair the damaged deck of bridge and procedure involved in lifting of continuous span of bridge raised interest among the students. The students participated actively in the session.
