The Department of Mathematics, MVJ College of Engineering, organized a Guest Lecture on ‘Role of Analysis in Differential Equation’, on 10th July, 2021.
Dr. A. K. Nandakumaran, Professor, Department of Mathematics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, was the Guest Speaker. The Lecture was conducted as a Webex live event, from 10:15 am to 11:30 am.
Participants: The webinar was attended by around 800 participants (faculty and students –First Year Engineering) from MVJCE.
Dr. Mekala, Assistant Professor, set things in motion and invited Mr. Naveen Bala, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, MVJCE, to deliver the welcome address. Mr. Naveen Bala welcomed the Guest Speaker and the Vice-Principal, the Registrar & Controller of Examinations, Staff and Students to the program.
Dr. M. Clement Joe Anand, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, presented the theme of the Lecture and also the abstract of the talk.
Dr. A. K. Nandakumaran started his presentation. The key points are as follows:
He started with the physical models, such as population model, atomic waste disposal problem, spring-mass-dashpot system, RLC circuit problem etc. He explained how analysis is the heart of Differential Equations.
The various developments in Mathematics like Fourier series, integration, integral equations, complex analysis, linear algebra, functional analysis, operator theory and differential geometry were explained elaborately by the Resource Person.
He also dwelt on the issues faced by students and teachers during the process of learning and understanding differential equations. Why a constant appears while integrating or solving first order ODEs, why there were two constants for second-order ODE all these were explained well by the Speaker.
Dr. A. K. Nandakumaran analysed at great length, equilibrium points, the shape of the curve, stability of equilibrium points, accelerated and decelerated growth. Logistic maps, linear and non-linear equations were also explained by the Speaker.
At the end of the program, our students raised their doubts and questions to the Resource Person, who clarified the points for better understanding. Dr. A. K. Nandakumaran offered continuous support and interaction with the faculty members in the Department and with students in future, if required.
Dr. Varalakshmi, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, rendered the vote of thanks to the Management, Principal, Vice-Principal, and Board of Management for the opportunity given. She offered gratitude to the ITHELPDESK also, for the good technical support.
This program was technically coordinated by Mr. Niranjan. L, Assistant Professor. Feedback of the program was coordinated by Mr. Raghu, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, MVJCE.
Outcome of the Guest Lecture
The Guest Lecture program was very useful to the students, as well as teachers, to build and strengthen their knowledge about differential equations and their applications. Students understood clearly about the behavior of the solutions in differential equations. They gained sound insight into the Role of Analysis in Differential Equations, from this Guest Lecture program.
