Guest Lecture on ‘Energy Devices’

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organized a Guest Lecture on the topic Energy Devices, on 25th February, 2023. The event was held at Smt. Rajalakshmi Seminar Hall. The Expert Speaker was Dr. Rathna G N, Principal Research Scientist, IISc., Bangalore.

Dr. Rathna G N received his B.E degree from Bangalore University, in 1982, and M.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the Indian Institute of Science, in 1990 and 1998, respectively, all in Electrical Engineering.

Dr. Rathna G N is a Principal Research Scientist in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Her research interests include applications in signal and image processing, and sensor networks. She is a Life Member of the Advanced Computing and Communications Society. She is the recipient of the Tata Rao prize , the award given for best paper published and the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Award from the Institution of Engineers, India.

Dr. P. Mahabaleswarappa, Principal, MVJCE, and Dr. I. Hameem Shanavas, Professor and HOD of ECE Department, welcomed the industry expert with a bouquet.

Dr. Rathna G N encouraged the students to participate in the IISc. Open Day, 2023. On this day, students, science and technology enthusiasts, and the public will have an opportunity to visit the Institute and go around the campus to explore the exciting science and technology initiatives and activities of the Institute.

Dr. Rathna G N shared her thoughts about Power devices, electronic devices that can be directly used in the power processing circuits to convert or control electric power. She enlightened the students about the energy devices and integration of energy generation and storage devices in the field of self-powered electronic devices because of the direct storage and immediate availability of the generated electricity in these devices. Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs) and Micro Supercapacitors (MSCs) are suitable for applications in all-in-one energy devices because TEGs can generate electricity from the heat dissipated during device operation, whereas MSCs can store and discharge electricity rapidly.

Outcome of the Event:

The event was able to create awareness among the students, about energy devices and their applications. In future, they will be equipped to apply these technologies for the social and economic upliftment of our country.
